We stayed at a hillside farm in Alagna, a tiny village tucked deep into an Alpine valley. The road ends where the mountain trail starts, and the place feels like a doorway to life at higher elevations. There aren't many residents, though Alagna is known as one of the birthplaces of Alpine mountaineering. The farm only takes around twelve guests, which seems just right for the hostess to look after by herself. Her husband and son care for about eighty cows, along with countless chickens and sheep. She and her daughter make lovely dairy products and run a little dairy shop at the foot of the mountain. The whole operation is kept within the family's own hands. The older hostess made a lasting impression on me, with her quick movements and quiet smile. As we left, she wished us, “Enjoy your life!” That sparkle in her eyes stayed with me. This hardworking, courageous family has carried its skills through generations and built its livelihood along the way. Thanks!

Traditional and cosy, with really lovely staff. It's a bit of a distance from Alagna, and the steep climb up could be tricky in winter.
