Really enjoyed the restaurant. The food and wine were superb, and the staff were so friendly.

The food we ordered was very good, which made the service especially disappointing. We felt uncomfortable and unwelcome, almost as if we shouldn’t have been there. Our Italian isn’t very good, so we spoke English, and that didn’t help us feel any more at ease. We’d have liked to try another dish, but the way we were treated put us off, and we left after one primi. We came to discover Montegusto last Tuesday before visiting Castel del Monte. If having customers is such a bother, why work in a restaurant? It’s a real shame, and I can’t recommend the place.

For a little over 50 euros we had two bottles of rosé, two baguettes, salad, and a few appetizers, so it’s inexpensive. The food is good enough that locals come in too, and the service was kind. It’s an unpretentious bar and restaurant within walking distance of Castel del Monte, with a fantastic view of the castle. Montegusto feels authentic. I’d skip the osteria at the castle’s foot, which felt like a tourist rip-off. Highly recommended.

We hadn’t booked and it was the Sunday of Ferragosto, the busiest point of the Italian summer as far as I’m concerned, but we got a table quickly and the service was good. This is a nice restaurant and bar at the foot of Castel del Monte, with a mix of tradition and modern style. Good value for money.
