Casa Ventura

The buildings and cloister remain original and are well looked after. These days the site feels a little isolated, but it’s peaceful, and the residents still know its history well. They keep the church key and can let visitors in. In the 16th century, Franciscan friars moved outside Arcevia to this somewhat hard-to-find spot, with a fine view of the road towards Mergo and Serra San Quirico, already known for the important abbeys of Sant'Ansuino and Santa Maria delle Stelle. The quieter setting suited their educational work, which apparently also included women, though secretly. Inside the church there’s an excellent painting by Ercole Ramazzani from 1564, and the building has recently been restored. After the friars moved to the new convent of San Giovanni B. fuori le mura, the site became farmers’ housing. Later, in the 1950s, many local people went to Belgium to look for work. It’s a moving place to visit and a good excuse to talk with the residents.
