Hotel Ideale

The huge garden terrace looks out over the Umbrian countryside, and our own balcony had a view over Assisi and the countryside too. Breakfast was hearty each morning and easily kept us going until lunch. The rooms are simple but comfortable. This quiet, family-run hotel was so welcoming and stole our hearts while we were in Assisi. I highly recommend this quaint family-run gem.

We really appreciated how much the family cares about looking after guests. They work hard, and it shows in the warm, professional service. The hotel sits just beyond the old city, so it’s quiet but still easy to walk to places around town, and the price feels fair for the quality. Breakfast had a good spread, though not a huge amount of variety. Rooms are on the small side, with tight, box-like showers. The valley views are a real highlight, especially from rooms facing that way at sunset; guests can also enjoy the scenery from the outdoor patios. The whole place is lovely, and the family’s pride in it is clear.

Assisi itself was beautiful, with excellent food, and the hotel's location and views were phenomenal. But our stay was terrible. The room was small, the bathroom even smaller, though the cleaning was adequate. About two weeks before the trip, the manager repeatedly called my family to push us to switch from the apartment we had booked, saying it was 200 meters away and didn't include breakfast. They eventually gave in to the constant calls. That turned out to be a mistake: breakfast cost an extra 25 euros per day, and my wife, who has a gluten allergy, couldn't eat about 95% of it. It wasn't worth the price either, since a similar breakfast in town cost less than 10-15 euros. At checkout, we were told we still owed 500+ euros. Once we got a full breakdown, the extra amount was actually 100-110 euros. I don't know where the 500+ figure came from. The manager who checked us in was rude and yelled, and treated our travel agent just as badly over email. She even offered to cover the extra fees herself and said she would never recommend the hotel to her clients again. We didn't have money or anything else stolen, but our bags had clearly been rummaged through, especially concerning given other reports about theft from rooms. The views were lovely, but the staff and service weren't. For Americans planning a trip to Assisi, I'd stay away. Stay here at your own risk.

The breakfast was amazing, and the place itself was so peaceful, with gardens looking out over the lovely town of Assisi. My room was at the far end of the garden, with lots of space, spotless cleanliness, and incredible views. I had a wonderful stay and highly recommend this hotel. Perfect.
