Elena C.
A truly shocking stay, with poor comfort and an owner I found rude and intrusive. I travel a lot around the world, and this was the worst place I've stayed. The house seems to have been renovated cheaply, with comfort overlooked and corners cut everywhere, from the mini fridge and stove that turns by itself to a bowl that looked like a reused ice cream tub. It felt like they were trying to squeeze as much money as possible from guests. I booked an apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen, but only one bedroom was clean and ready. The kitchen had no gas or furniture, not even a pot or pan, despite being advertised as equipped for cooking. There were partly used toiletries in the bathroom, and no washing machine. For the same price, they moved me to a tiny studio with a queen-size bed and a horrible, cramped shower. Its supposedly stocked kitchen was still far below the basics: the hood didn't work and there were very few utensils and cookware, though it did have gas and a washing machine. There was no microwave. The place was dark even in broad daylight, like a dungeon, and the Wi-Fi didn't work for several days. I'd paid by bank transfer, so unfortunately I felt I had no choice but to stay. The owner said she'd left milk for breakfast, but it had expired on January 22nd, while I checked in on February 5th. The owner insisted I leave between 9 and 11 every morning so she could come in to clean and use things stored in the locked basement. I said I'd handle the cleaning myself because I was staying three weeks and wanted to be free, but she kept insisting. Only after three days did she agree not to disturb me every morning, and she was clearly resentful about it. It all seemed absurd. My father stayed for five days and slept on an uncomfortable sofa bed instead of a proper bed. Even though I had booked for two, I was asked for another €50 for his towels and sheets, though the original price was meant to be €25 a night. I objected, but paid and kept quiet, because money doesn't make a gentleman. The pillows felt like they were filled with tennis balls. There's a crookedly mounted Chinese TV that only works occasionally. It seems like it may have come from a sale of 1990 models. The remote had dead batteries, which I had to buy myself. There are two air conditioners that can heat as well, but the owner only provided one remote, and I don't understand why. The wardrobes, including the single-door one in the studio, had no hangers, and their upper sections couldn't be used without clothes rails. There were no clothes racks, not even in the entrance hall. The only table was a wobbly contraption that converts from a console into a 12-seater. It came apart by itself and had no legroom even when partly closed. The chairs were only useful for resting your feet on from the sofa, since sitting on them for more than two minutes was impossible. The sofa had a wooden beam across both the seat and the back. If you were tired and not careful, you could hurt your tailbone. It was unusable. Avoid Via Grotte, Signora Maria, and the mysterious "American cousin" who supposedly makes crazy organizational decisions for her, since he doesn't even have the courage to say he's the one making them. The attached photos were taken in broad daylight on a sunny day, with 18 degrees Celsius and bright sun outside.
