The smaller group made the tasting feel relaxed and friendly, and there was even a friendly dog around. We tried the wines with some meat and cheese, and bought a few bottles afterward. On our Lake Garda trip, we booked the 11am tasting for my birthday. The guide was warm, passionate, and clearly knew the subject. We sampled four wines, in tasting pours rather than full glasses, then saw the vineyard and the area where they make the wine and learned a lot about the process.

Julia made us feel at home, and her way of telling the stories behind the wine made the visit feel personal. She talked about its history, how it’s made today, and the family stories, so I left feeling informed and connected to the place. I’ve been to quite a few tastings, and this was easily my favorite. As a professor who often uses stories to open up science, knowledge, and community, I didn’t expect a wine experience to affect me so personally and intellectually. A small winery tasting with a personal feel is just right if that’s what you’re after. Our host was engaging, and the different wines came with really good salami and cheese. I enjoyed the session a lot.

We’re a young couple on a wine trip through Spain, the south of France, and northern Italy, with a visit to a vineyard on Mt. Vesuvius planned in a few days. We chose this winery after reading that it was family-run and offered a nice customer experience, although we’d also seen that the pours were only small sips. Unforeseen events meant we couldn’t make our booking. The owner’s only reply was, “I’m afraid that no refund or slot change is possible.” We were told we’d have to pay again for another slot. That’s a real shame: we’re trying to support small wineries over big companies without much history or tradition, and we buy wine for ourselves and friends at every winery we visit. Fortunately, a nearby winery let us join a slot that was already full. We got to taste and buy Bardolino DOP wine there. If you’re in the area, we’d recommend trying a different winery.
