The audio guide is worth asking for, since they don’t offer it at the ticket desk unless you request it. The lighting is brilliant, so the exhibits are easy to see. There’s an incredible exhibition of Tarocchi, including playing and Taro cards and lots of unique objects tied to their exciting history. The art specialists tell the story in their own fascinating way, and the visitor facilities are excellent.

We liked the Tarot temporary exhibition, and there are some worthwhile pieces in the collection too. It’s a nice place overall. The ticket line was confusing, though: we waited just to be told at the counter that we could go straight inside. Silly.

It was wonderfully quiet when we visited, though that may have been because it was a Thursday in December. The gallery is fairly small for such an important institution, with fascinating old masters and religious paintings, mainly from the 14th to 18th centuries. I also found the temporary show of work on stone, including slate and alabaster, really interesting.

There’s also a restaurant, a small cafe and public green space in the PwC gardens. Keep hold of your tickets if you head out there, since you’ll need them to get back into the museum. We spent most of a day looking at the paintings and sculptures. There was too much to see in detail, but we still felt we got our money’s worth.

The collection is curated really well, and the staff were very polite. It’s a nice gallery, a manageable size and not crowded. I wouldn’t spend time on the temporary 'Tarot Cards' exhibition, though; it didn’t really deserve our attention.
