The apartment was dirty, too. The bathroom ventilation had clearly never been cleaned, and some dishes in the cupboard were dirty. There’s no car access to the apartment’s street or the nearby streets, either. The heat made this the worst night of our 14-day trip through Italy with our two young kids. The upstairs had no working air-conditioning and was unbearable, so the kids and I slept downstairs beside a tiny portable air-conditioner. My husband had to sleep on the floor because nobody could stay upstairs for more than a few minutes. Even making pasta downstairs, the heat was unreal. The washing machine was packed with towels, so we couldn’t use it. It was day eight of our trip, and I’d planned to do laundry. In a word, discreditable!
