Torre Dell Orologio Apartment by Wonderful Italy

The climb involves steep wooden stairs, so it may not work for anyone with reduced mobility. But for those who can manage them, Torre dell’Orologio is a beautiful, memorable visit. From the top, the views across Bologna are spectacular, and the place has a lovely romantic feel, especially in the afternoon light. The staff were friendly and welcoming too.

We nearly weren't allowed in because we arrived ten minutes late, so make sure you get there on time. The second half means climbing some rickety stairs, and sensible shoes are a good idea. Book your tickets through welcome Bologna for a cheaper price.

I've made this climb twice now and will come back next time I'm in Bologna. Go around sunset if you can, though the views are extraordinary at any time. From the tower you can see all over central Bologna, the hills beyond, Piazza Maggiore below, and the city's famous towers. There are no annoying plexiglass barriers or steel cages blocking the view, and they manage visitor numbers well, so there's plenty of room to walk around and take it all in. The €10 ticket also includes access to the city's art collection in the same building. Don't miss it.

The climb's last section is quite tough, so I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with physical difficulties. Also, book your ticket as soon as possible since there may not be any slots left. The view is absolutely worth it, though the price would feel a bit high without the gallery admission.
