Lewald

At around 3am, a mouse jumped onto my bed and woke me. I turned on the lights and it quickly vanished, probably somewhere in the room. Shaken, I went downstairs to ask for help, but reception was closed because of the late hour. The next morning, I told the cleaning lady what happened when she knocked. She didn't seem surprised, and said there were “some animals” outside that damaged the balcony flower pots, which the hotel had to replace. She suggested the mouse may have come in because my room overlooked the nearby cemetery. I stayed one night at Hotel Lewald in Bolzano and left disappointed after a sleepless, stressful night. I felt there was no response or accountability from the staff. The location and design may appeal to some, but I can't recommend it. Cleanliness and peace of mind are basic expectations, and I didn't get either.

The owners were magnificent, and I couldn't fault them. Our large, comfortable room was well equipped. There are lovely gardens, secure underground parking, a swimming pool, and a well-stocked bar. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice, and they gave us recommendations and a list of nearby places to eat. Don't let the hotel's position on Google Maps put you off.

The room was big, cozy, and very clean, with excellent facilities. Breakfast was also really good, and the private garage had loads of room, which was especially handy on our motorbike trip with all the packing and unpacking. We were welcomed and helped to settle in so well. The hotel has a SPA and a private pool in the backyard, though I didn't get to try them. Lewald is just outside Bolzano in a quiet suburb. A taxi from the centre costs 10 euros, or bus tickets are included in the hotel fee, which is handy if you stay more than one night. I really enjoyed the stay and can recommend it for any kind of accommodation. I'll definitely come back when I'm in the area.

Away from the city centre, and the breakfast is basic. The SPA is great, with three saunas.
