The remote setting made a refreshing change from a city hotel, and I’d come back for a hiking trip in the Appennines. The drive up can be challenging, and getting down to Borgotaro takes time if you’re planning day trips, so this kind of stay won’t suit every traveler. Still, the view over the Val di Taro is stunning. We only booked bed and breakfast, but the charming room was clean and comfortable, the hosts were very welcoming, and their home-baked breakfast treats were delicious. We even spotted wild boars from the nearby forests.

Paolo and Mirella are wonderful hosts, and they make you and your four-legged friend feel welcome. It’s a peaceful place to get away from the daily routine, with nothing much to do but relax and eat well. You can add a walk or jog up to the hilltop if you like. The old colonial house has been refurbished and sits on a hillside about 600 mt above sea level.

The food was a real highlight, and Paolo and his wife gave us such a warm welcome. We found this lovely agroturismo in the Appenines while looking for somewhere not too far from Parma. It’s tucked away above a beautiful valley, a great spot for quiet and nature. There are lots of well-marked trails nearby, and we hardly saw anyone else on them.

The meal ended with homemade semifreddo with amaretti biscuits and chocolate, and even the glass of wine deserves a mention. It was truly organic. Before that, we had excellent cured meats, cheese, and jams, then some unusual and spectacular first courses, followed by roast beef and marinated zucchini, all delicious. We were traveling on the Parma-La Spezia highway near Borgo Taro and stopped for lunch at the Le Querciole farmhouse. We called ahead, and owner Paolo gave us directions along a paved mountain road. He greeted us in a wonderfully informal way and seated us in the small dining room. It felt less like a restaurant than lunch at a friend's house, and we waited until everyone had arrived before eating.

The hospitality was excellent, and we had an Easter full of good food in a place that feels frozen in time. Highly recommended! Ivana and Paolo
