Hotel Piuro

We worried we might run out of things to do after all our research, but there was plenty nearby, and this ended up being a highlight of our Italian trip. The mountains around Piuro are spectacular, and the village sits in a quiet valley just east of Chiavenna. You can explore by car, on foot, or on the hotel's e-bikes: there are the Falls, Palazzo Vertemate, long, mostly flat bike paths, Old Town Chiavenna, Pianazzola, St. Moritz, and northern Como for day trips. Across the river, the still-active Chiesa Arcipretale is a lovely old church. Crotto Belvedere is a six-minute walk and well worth it. We also spent time at the pool, looking out over the river and the mountain behind the hotel. The place is peaceful and low-key. Next door, the other hotel property has a pleasant riverside bar and gardens. The shared back lawn is a nice spot for happy hour, with good charcuterie. The four of us, two couples who travel discerningly, stayed four nights in the third week of September. This small, family-run hotel is a real gem: clean, updated, and comfortable, though the rooms aren't large. Food was very good and staff attentive. When the safe in one room failed, the owner brought out a replacement from inventory and personally oversaw the change. That's hands-on management. Parking was easy, and we always found a spot right in front. We highly recommend staying several nights. We're not sure when, but expect to return.
