Our stay got worse after a poor start. We chose this as the most expensive house in the area because the listing called it “private” and “exclusive,” but it didn’t feel that way. There’s an olive grove above the house, and every couple of days the owner’s father came to water it. Nobody had told us. One day we simply noticed a stranger’s car parked in our driveway. The facilities were disappointing too. The listing photos showed two sun loungers, but only one was there. My wife had to lie on two wooden benches pushed together to sunbathe. The old hammock burst while I was on it and left me with back pain. The bathroom lock handle was broken, so you couldn’t lock the door. There was only hot water in the shower; on a really hot summer day, a cold shower wasn’t possible. The owner said the pipes run above ground and that we had to let the water run for ten minutes before it got cold. That seems poorly managed for a house advertised as exclusive, and wasteful when the system uses water from a large tank that needs refilling every two days. At check-in, the owner insisted we sign a rental contract, which we believed went against Airbnb’s rules. We checked the Airbnb terms and offered to show our IDs, as required in Italy, but said we wouldn’t sign another contract. He was rude and lectured us about knowing Italian law better. It wasn’t a nice start to the holiday. He also kept contacting us over minor things, like asking why we’d closed the gate or wanting to take our rubbish after three days, even though the bins were very large.
