Set on the Giomein hill, it looks over the whole Breuil valley toward the Matterhorn. De Amicis, who stayed here for several years along with many notable people, including the royal family, called it “the emperor.” After sunset the center near the stream can feel humid, while the climate here is ideal. This is the oldest civil building in Breuil-Cervinia, not a mountain pasture or religious building. Its walls are over a meter thick, giving it an ideal indoor climate, quite unlike the reinforced concrete buildings from the 1950s and 1960s that are common in Cervinia. Skiing is reliable and convenient: the slopes back to Cretaz start just 10 meters away and are kept snow-sure with modern artificial snow systems.

Built in 1800, this is Cervinia’s oldest condominium, and I fell for it the first time I saw it. Too bad there aren’t any apartments for sale, otherwise...
