Bologna

You can tell the hotel is family-run, and staying here feels like supporting them. The staff put a lot of heart into their work.

The flowers around the hotel make it feel especially welcoming, thanks to the lady of the house. The place was clean and well kept, and the location was excellent. Our choir, over 30 of us, stayed at Hotel Bologna for four nights during the Alta Pusteria Choir Festival in June 2025. Concert delays and traffic meant our schedule often slipped, and we could be noisy, but the Bertolani family and staff were patient, even waiting to serve dinner or staying up to let us in after late concerts. The rooms were on the small side, though each had a bathroom and most had a balcony. We fell asleep and woke to birds singing outside. The restaurant worked around our food restrictions and other requests, and the bar/café looked after us too. If I return to Val Pustertal, I’ll ask to stay at Hotel Bologna again.

I spent a week here for the choir festival. It was a cosy hotel in a great spot. Best wishes to the male waiter, he was organized and efficient, and served wine in a spectacular way.

The room smelled strongly of the bathroom, so I had to keep the windows open, and the hygiene overall seemed poor. It was also very dim, with the brightest light in the bathroom. The bedside socket was broken; when I told the manager, who is also the owner, he asked if I had broken it and left it as it was. I had to charge my devices by the door for the rest of the stay. Check-in was frustrating too. They had misspelled my name and didn't know my surname, then kept asking me to confirm it. Once they noticed the error, they said, “We are a hotel, not customs.” I couldn't see how I was meant to verify details when the name was wrong. I politely asked the manager for a simple takeaway breakfast because I had an early hike to the Three Peaks and couldn't eat during the scheduled breakfast time. He shouted that it was impossible and that it was my problem. He has a terrible temper and poor emotional control. There was no need to shout; he could simply have said it wasn't possible. Since he owns the hotel, I had nowhere to file a complaint, which left me very frustrated. Even youth hostels aren't this bad. Of all the hotels on my 10-day hiking trip in this area, this was the worst experience. I strongly wouldn't recommend it. An honest review will probably bring another angry response from the owner.
