Sikania Resort & Spa

The pools were very nice and large, the beach was sandy, and there was plenty of good food. The rooms were pleasant and set in separate little buildings. The animation team was incredible, with fun activities all day. This could be a good summer holiday, especially with kids, and you’ll probably enjoy your stay. Still, there are some drawbacks. The hotel is far from everything, with no cities or even houses nearby. The last 2 km are sandy off-road driving, and without a car there’s nothing to see or do. The local area is among the poorest in southern Italy, so short trips feel pretty pointless, with little to see or do. About 90% of the guests are Italian, so everything is in Italian, including signs and information, and the animation team speaks only Italian. Apparently you can reserve things at the hotel, but that option seems to be available only to Italians. Half the pool sunbeds had room numbers on them, and nearly all the beach spots were reserved too. Even at the restaurant, it was a matter of luck to find an unbooked table. That felt annoying and unfair. We also had ants in our room. It wasn’t serious, but they swarmed anything edible we left out.

The friendly staff and the rooms are the only reasons I’m giving this place 2 out of 5. It doesn’t deserve four stars, three at most. The hotel is far from any town or village, and there’s no transport at all, not even a daily bus or shuttle. The website promises internet in every room, but that’s not true. You can only make emergency calls from the room, so forget checking email or browsing. The free beach umbrellas are limited to one row, so you have to get up at sunrise to claim one unless you want to pay. People rush to the beach each morning, and there’s no supermarket at the resort. Then there’s the food, which was a huge disappointment and not what I’d expect in Sicily. It was the same low-quality food with little choice, even the fruit was poor. With all the great produce and recipes this region has, calling it Sicilian food feels like an insult. Expect the same dessert every day, with only the topping color changing. Worst holiday experience ever.

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful resort in the south of the island. The staff were great, and the food was good quality. The only thing I’d improve is the entertainment team, who seemed underprepared for some events and activities.

I haven’t stayed at other resorts in Sicily, so I can’t compare Sikania. This one is simple and clean, with friendly staff, a nice pool, and easy beach access. The first two rows of beach loungers cost 15 euros. You need a prepaid card to buy espresso or beer, though there are a few water and juice stations around. There are three meals a day, and the pasta dishes are delightful. It can get quite hot and a bit humid, so dress for the weather. Enjoy!
