Corte Lantieri

The owner was flexible when we told him we planned to leave after one night of our three-night family suite booking, and he didn’t penalize us. That’s one of the two stars. The other is for the setting. The staff were friendly, and the wine they make was good, but the rest was a huge disappointment. We were glad to leave first thing in the morning after a restless night. The website photos and descriptions were misleading. The pleasant-looking main area needs a thorough renovation, and the room, “Selene,” seemed like it had once been a storage room. It smelled damp, wasn’t properly clean, and had old hair and dust on the floor. The furniture was worn, with grease marks on the bed’s headrest. The windows were too high for a view, and there wasn’t one anyway. The shower had fungus. The courtyard looked drab and forlorn, with the back of the kitchen and noisy machines giving it a shanty town feel. Next door, two loud, aggressive Dobermanns barked from just beyond the fence and terrified our toddlers. Dinner was just okay, nothing more: fish lasagna or white wine risotto, followed by breaded salmon trout or beef cutlets. Breakfast was very basic, only sweet croissants or cake, and the cappuccinos took ages. The pool wasn’t heated, though that was just okay for our young children on a summer day.

We held a wedding ceremony with friends here. The food was okay, though not especially elaborate. After an hour, the owner started complaining about the music and the chorus for the bride and groom. Once the wedding cake had been served, he called the police, leaving the bride devastated. He was rude, inconsiderate, and uncultured, and ruined the party for no reason.

The Franciacorta tasting was the reason we went, and the location was beautiful. We stayed for dinner too, and the food was really good. I would have liked more explanation of the wines and pairings. It’s on the expensive side, though I’d say it was worth it.
