From our charming farmhouse, the walking routes north seem endless. With enough energy, you can reach any peak, and for the higher ground I'd choose walking over biking. Below, the valley is there to explore however you like: bigger towns and tiny villages, sometimes just an old church among rolling hills. You can stroll the lower riverbanks too, and bring a fishing rod if you fancy. Mix in local shops and boutiques, then head back up in the evening to sleep under the stars, perhaps climbing higher again the next day. The upper Arno Valley is a little paradise, with the Arezzo Apennines behind it and Pratomagno rising above the other mountains. The Florentine side is beautiful too, full of nature and surprises, like the sudden sight of an old castle ruin. On clear days, you can look toward the lower Chianti mountains and even Florence's first foothills. Florence is about 40 minutes away by car or train. Don't get pulled only toward the bright lights of the beautiful capitals. Valdarno has wonderful views from every angle, and history lovers can find old churches and small museums in nearly all the larger towns. It's a broad, varied area that deserves to be rediscovered. Come with curiosity, a willingness to learn and take it all in, a calm pace, and a smile in your heart. Ager Mentis is a small but delightful starting point for this generous region. Happy travels!
