I love the country, but there are things about Italy I don’t think I’ll ever understand. People dress like fashion models in expensive, clean clothes, yet seem content to live in a city that looks dirty and run down. This piazza could have been lovely, but it was covered in litter. It looked as if recent streetworks hadn’t been properly cleared: plastic bottles were scattered around, along with bits of sticky tape I couldn’t identify. There was also paper rubbish and strange black stains all over the ground. The scaffolding may be out of anyone’s hands, but the photos make the place look miles better than it really was.

I walked through this lovely square on a fine afternoon, 2 February 2026, and there were only a few people passing by. It’s surrounded by historic buildings, and a few stalls in the piazza sell candies. The place was quite clean, and I enjoyed strolling around.

There’s no charge to visit this pedestrian piazza, and it’s ADA accessible, though there’s no parking. It’s the next square north along via Etnea from the Duomo, with the buildings set back around the open space. What caught my eye was the symbol of Catania in the street. I was enchanted by it, and enjoyed watching other travelers spot it for the first time while I took pictures. The openness gives the city a welcoming feel rather than a cold one.

Piazza Università is a wide, impressive square right in central Catania and a real hub for city life. It’s lively, with a varied crowd, and makes a nice place to pause, sit, and watch people. We especially liked hearing the street singers and seeing the artists perform, which brought a lot of cultural character to the atmosphere. The University of Catania buildings are beautiful, and the piazza is a great place for photos. It also connects easily to other main walking streets. If you’re exploring the historic center, stop here to take in the architecture and lively, artistic feel.

The building looks great, and there’s information to read about its history from a few hundred years ago. It’s a real piece of Italian heritage. I found it confusing to work out where to enter or buy tickets, since some areas were fenced off.
