The hosts were wonderful, and the farm-made wines were a real highlight. We also loved the food, especially for the prices, and the cakes at breakfast were a great selection. The stone buildings sit in a lovely mountain setting, with a clean, refreshing pool and daily room cleaning. It’s a great base for exploring Calabria, and we’ll be back.

This is a lovely starting point for a hike, and renting a car makes it easier to explore nearby villages or visit Madonna dello Scoglio, about 11 km away. Agriturismo Feudo Gagliardi is also a peaceful, charming place to spend the night, though it’s around 10-15 minutes by car or taxi from Roccella Ionica. The property is part of a working farm, where the owner makes wine and grows oranges. We enjoyed those with dinner, along with local sausages and cheese. The cook deserves five stars.

The restaurant was at Michelin-star level. We stayed for three days, and the owners are incredibly driven. People like them can help make the world better.

The pool, tucked among greenery, is lovely, and breakfast tarts made with homemade jam are delicious, though I’d have liked a few more. The drive to the agriturismo is pretty bumpy. Our quadruple room could also use a few more touches to make it more comfortable.
