Casa Rossa

The pool was just the right temperature, and Florence, Siena and San Gimignano are among the major attractions within an hour's drive. The hosts were so kind and lovely. You could really feel how warm they were, and we had a fantastic time. I'd absolutely recommend this place to a friend.

We have been coming to Italy every year since 2005, and this is the most beautiful area we can imagine. Casa Rossa sits just above Certaldo, in the lovely Chianti countryside, near the charming villages of San Gimignano, Barberino and Certaldo Alto. Florence, Greve in Chianti, Castellina and Siena are all at most 45 minutes away by car. If you'd rather not drive to Florence, the train from Certaldo is really convenient. There are loads of good restaurants nearby, including Osteria di Casa in Chianti up in Fiano, Antica Fonte in Certaldo Alto and La Capannina sul lago over the hill. There are also plenty of wineries. Villa Il Pozzo is a kilometer uphill toward Fiano, with fantastic wine, a grand view and very friendly staff. After three years, we finally made it back to Casa Rossa, and the place still feels magical. The views, location and pool are wonderful. The new owners, Enzo and his daughter Roni, made sure we were comfortable. When we mentioned the wifi wasn't working, Roni brought over a portable wifi device that same day for us to borrow free of charge for the rest of our stay. That was a big help with our children, aged 11 and 13. They are also improving the apartments, which already showed in the newly installed AC and new stove. Temperatures were between 33 and 37 degrees, so the AC made it much easier to sleep well. Enzo and Roni were friendly without being intrusive, helpful and quick to find solutions. They had lived in New York for many years, which made things easier for us since we don't speak Italian. A lovely spot in authentic Tuscan countryside, with a beautiful view over vineyards and olive trees. Great location.

The place itself is absolutely gorgeous, with incredible views. I'm giving it three stars because the service let us down. We found the hosts unhelpful when we tried to book taxis, and they said they had never booked one before. Their manner felt rude, and we couldn't get help with anything else we needed. Neither the WiFi nor our US phone service worked during our stay, though the WiFi finally came on about 20 minutes before we left. If you stay here, make sure you have a rental car.
