Tonzhaus Hotel & Restaurant

The room was pretty and breakfast was nice, but the rest of our short March stay was disappointing. The owner barely looked up from her computer to greet us, then seemed irritated and dismissed us when we asked what the 3/4 meal arrangement meant. We'd paid for it expecting what it means in the rest of Alto Adige: breakfast, a light lunch, and dinner. At Tonzhaus, the light lunch was literally one slice of cake and a cup of tea. Anything else, even coffee, cost extra, so we had to go out to find something to eat. We've stayed at many hotels in Alto Adige, and 3/4 means a light lunch, not a tiny snack. Dinner didn't meet my expectations either, and ham and melon in winter didn't feel seasonal. When I went to the spa, neither of the two saunas was on. I think this place still has a long way to go.

Breakfast was one of the best I've had and really lived up to the hotel's four stars. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and lovely decor, with a beautiful view over the swimming pool. The rooms are modern and nice, though the shower doesn't feel as fancy as a four star hotel should. The spa is less impressive, with few teas and drinks and decor that feels a bit dated. Service was good overall, but some receptionists were friendlier than others. Check-in didn't feel very welcoming for what we paid, while the younger woman at checkout was really friendly. The hotel is well located near Maso corto. I'd come back, yes.

The food may have been the best part of our week. The owner himself was at the pots and pans, and he really knows his craft. We also loved the roomy, brand new spa, especially the infinity pool. It's in a lovely spot, close to lots of scenic hiking routes.

I didn't stay at the hotel, but from what I saw there and experienced at the restaurant, it seemed well managed and good quality. The food was excellent, tasty, and served in big portions.
