I went to the local Catholic church today, Saturday, for the 6 pm vigil Mass. It's a Franciscan monastery church, and a Franciscan monk priest led a great service. The church is big and beautiful. They had little holy water bottles with the Virgin Mary to take home. I loved it, and it was good for fulfilling our Sunday obligation.

The church is large, bright, and beautiful. Spending time with the Franciscan friars is always a wonderful experience, and I could feel their kindness and joy. I recommend visiting for the Feast of Forgiveness in Assisi on August 1st.

Walking in, you see a boat carrying a statue of the Madonna del Mare. In the evening darkness, with only the candles around it lighting the statue, the scene moved me. There's a huge crucifix over the altar, with a beautiful Jesus and a white cloth draped from it. The church is very modern, but has a strong, intense feeling. I was able to pray quietly and collect my thoughts, with birdsong from the pine forest outside.

Surrounded by greenery, the church has a striking setting. I went to Mass there on Sunday, and found the service simple, with lots of people taking part. The friars were exceptionally kind. Highly recommended.
