Grand Hotel Terme

Breakfast was very poor, mostly frozen pastries reheated before serving. The rooms have only basic amenities, and some bathrooms haven't been renovated. The corridors are dim and unsettling, with old carpet that brings the Overlook Hotel from the Shining to mind. This old, crumbling building feels like a reflection of a town that has seen better days. Chianciano was booming in the 70s-80s, and the hotel's four stars may have made sense then. Part of the hotel has been renovated, but it still looks extremely outdated. By international standards, I'd call it a good two-star hotel. They charge for rooms as though this were a luxury hotel, with no accountability. I'd stay outside Chianciano in the phenomenal countryside of the Val D’Orcia instead of spending money on a place that's been declining for a long time.

We booked two rooms described as family-sized for August 2025, expecting the renovated four-star spa stay shown in the advertising. The rooms we were shown had visible water stains and mildew, and looked nothing like the website pictures. We chose not to stay the night and had to quickly find somewhere else. The front desk manager kindly pointed out other towns where we could look for accommodation. She also said a full refund might be possible if we contacted the hotel director. We've tried several times and still haven't received a reply. In my view, this isn't suitable for families or anyone expecting comfort, hygiene, or modern facilities. I'd suggest the surrounding countryside or Montepulciano.

The bed was OK and breakfast was VERY good. Service was very good too, the best thing about the place. The ground floor looks good, the spa is OK, and I found it easy to get there with Google Maps, despite comments saying otherwise. But this is a two-star hotel, not four. I travel to four-star places regularly, and this one is nowhere close. The rooms and hallways are OLD, not charmingly old, just old and poorly maintained. The room was small, with ugly furniture, and even though ours was 22m2, I can't imagine what a room 4m2 smaller is like. The bathrooms have been renovated and are good, but after brushing your teeth the sink takes about five minutes to drain. The windows don't close properly, and you can hear EVERYTHING your neighbors do, including people upstairs flushing the toilet. There was a minibar price list with water, coke, beer and prosecco, and the prices weren't too high, but it had only four waters in it. The hotel should cost half as much. Even at half the price, the quality wouldn't feel very good.

The breakfast room has a nice view, and the breakfast itself was delicious, especially the coffee. The beds were comfortable, and the room was decent for two people. If you get a balcony, that's a nice view too. Nearby shops, a pharmacy and restaurants are within walking distance. Getting to the entrance is tricky. Taxis have trouble finding the streets, and tour buses can't reach the hotel, so with heavy suitcases you'll need to walk up a small hill. The hotel is quiet and semi-modern, tucked away from the main roads in the Terme area. There was a bad smell from the plumbing, whether it came from our bathroom or next door. We had to open all the doors to clear it. The walls are thin, so we could hear guests talking in other rooms. We called ahead to ask about an iron for a wedding, and the front desk said they had one. On the day, they said there wasn't one and someone needed to take our clothes away. We agreed, though we were worried about getting them back. The staff assured us they'd help, and our things did come back later that day. At checkout, though, the 20 euro charge wasn't explained upfront. It's fine for a short stay, but I wouldn't recommend more than two days.
