Il Fornello

I arrived excited for the month I'd booked, the minimum stay, but left after just one night, deeply disappointed. The rooms were extremely hot in 35 degree weather, with no air conditioning or even fans, and there was no communal space because it was “under construction”. The room was filthy, and I found a scorpion in the bed after lying down. The shower was moldy and wouldn't get hot. Other guests told me they'd gone weeks without hot showers. No one was there when I arrived, so I wandered around the building for a while. When I asked for a refund and offered to pay for one night, they offered only 200 back out of more than 900. The whole experience was really disappointing.

We had such a good time at Il Fornello in July with our two kids, ages 5 and 3, and would happily return soon. The owners and hosts were always available for questions and accommodating. It's a peaceful place with a nice balance between doing your own thing and joining activities. We enjoyed pizza nights, making pasta, movies, and meeting other people. The clean, spacious apartment had room to cook simple meals indoors, and the large outdoor kitchen was easy to access and great for food and drinks. Adults and children both loved the pool. You do need a car to reach nearby areas, though we borrowed bikes to visit the nearest village. I'd also like to come back on my own to work.

Il Fornello was a beautiful place for a month, and Stina and her crew went out of their way to make us comfortable. Set in an old country house and converted factory, it has plenty of rustic character and history. You get to settle into village life and enjoy the slow pace of the countryside, away from the usual tourist path. We worked from our spacious apartments, the outdoor kitchen, the coworking space, and beside the pool, so it suits digital nomads well. It feels rural and remote, but picturesque villages with good restaurants are close, and you can reach Rome and Florence by train. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting time in the Italian countryside, especially digital nomads or larger groups of families and friends who want shared time in the property's many common spaces. Stina's warm, genuine welcome and thoughtful eye for the small details made me feel at ease right away. She was open, transparent, and consistently reliable. I made meaningful friendships while I was there, and the location was perfect for exploring both Tuscany and Umbria. I fell in love with the place.
