Rocca di Pierle

The cooking class with Sylvia and Sheila was a highlight for me. We rolled pasta by hand and learned local sauces, and their enthusiasm for Umbrian food made it feel like a glimpse into Italian family traditions. Rocca di Pierle is a restored stone estate with terracotta details and gardens overlooking the broad Niccone Valley. From the terrace you can see olive groves, vineyards, and the patchwork countryside for miles. It feels quaint and romantic, with a quiet atmosphere that makes you feel at home and far away at the same time. The staff's warmth is personal, attentive without being intrusive, and they made every request feel easy. A car is useful for exploring farther afield, but not essential, since rides can be arranged and local towns and trattorias are reachable with drivers or other pre-booked transport. The remote setting is part of the appeal, like finding a secret place. Rocca di Pierle blends rustic elegance with genuine hospitality, and would suit couples after a romantic break or anyone looking for authenticity and quiet beauty.

Breakfast on the panoramic terrace was a treat, and you can pick different things each day to suit your plans and appetite. The cooked eggs and ham are worth the small extra charge. Dinner felt personal too, thoughtfully planned around our preferences and served in an intimate setting, with excellent wine suggestions. We spent eight wonderful nights being cared for by people who clearly love their work and use fresh local produce. I've never felt so looked after or so relaxed. We were welcomed by wonderful hosts, who made the whole stay warm and memorable. Rocca di Pierle has a scenic view that reminded us of the movie Walk in the Clouds, and its central position makes it easy to reach different regions of Italy. The room was spotless, cosy, and more spacious than expected, and the pool and grounds were beautiful. Cortona is a 15-minute drive, with other lovely Tuscan and Umbrian villages nearby. Andrea was so lovely that we now think of him as a friend, and hope to see him again next year. We wouldn't consider staying anywhere else on a return visit. We just opened a bottle of red wine we bought from Andrea for 5 euros, and it's wonderful. He also sells his own cheese and a range of oils. Amazing place, highly recommend.
