The old building has a lovely mix of traditional and modern furniture, with views across vineyards and dozens of villages. We also ate very well: a generous breakfast of homemade and local products, followed by a delicious four-course Piedmontese dinner. The young couple behind Cascina San Michele are clearly passionate about both wine and hospitality, and we learned a lot about how the wine is made.

The friendly staff, pleasant breakfast, and lovely setting made for a nice stay, though the breakfast choices were limited. In a place like this, I would have loved more homemade cakes and bread instead of mini croissants. Some small details also got missed: the TV and sockets weren't working, and the room had no mirror apart from the bathroom one. The evening self-service setup is a great idea, letting you sit outside and chat over a good bottle of wine. A small pool or a couple of four-person jacuzzis would be a welcome addition. Even with those issues, it was a lovely experience in a lovely place.
