The spa was a welcome reset after our 100km ride the day before. We tried the divided pool, with its swimming lane and a long jet-lined bench, then the salt room, dry sauna, spacious jacuzzi and Turkish hammam. From the jacuzzi and pool, you can see the mountaintops, and we left feeling ready to ride around Gran Sasso the next day. We’d meant to stay one night at Tana del Lupo during our bike tour from the Abruzzo coast into the mountains, but the setting, cosy chalets, homemade food and warm welcome from Maria Grazia and her daughter persuaded us to stay for two. Even though we arrived late, they quickly made us dinner, and Maria insisted we take our time and enjoy a swim beneath Gran Sasso. We also walked to the picturesque nearby village of Poggio Umbricchio. Tana del Lupo has a peaceful atmosphere and a lovely mix of rustic charm and modern spa facilities. Maria Grazia’s care for her home, business and family comes through, and her homemade strawberry jam is a treat. We hope to return soon. Paul and Fiona Cambridge, England
