Our last night on Favignana turned into one of the worst Airbnb experiences I’ve had. We checked in expecting a B&B, then learned there was no breakfast on site. They gave us coupons for a cafe in the town square, which didn’t seem like a big deal at first. When we presented them the next morning, the cafe seemed unhappy with the coupons and still charged us for the coffees and one pastry, since breakfast wasn’t fully covered. The checkout time in the Airbnb listing was 11am. We’ve stayed at plenty of Airbnbs and try to respect the host’s timing. At about 9:45am, we headed out for breakfast, expecting to return in time to collect our suitcases and leave. The manager saw us leaving, heard that we were going for breakfast and would be back, and smiled without raising any concern. We were walking back at 10:45am when we saw a cleaning lady at the entrance looking upset. Once she realized we were guests, she rushed inside and told the manager that the English speakers had returned. A couple of minutes later, she knocked, came into our room, and demanded that we leave immediately. She said she had been waiting since 10am to clean. We were confused, and she started yelling at my girlfriend and me, speaking condescendingly and insulting us in Italian, though I could understand enough. The manager sided with her and said checkout was at 10am. When we showed him the listing, which clearly said 11am, he came into our room with the maid while we were still gathering our things. That felt like a complete invasion of our personal space. It seemed to be a miscommunication on his part, but instead of taking charge as the host, he escalated things with the maid. We were paying guests, yet they shouted at us and ignored their own Airbnb checkout time. We left feeling humiliated and appalled. This host needs to improve how he treats customers. The room itself was dirty and dated, and we slept poorly because it was right on a Main Street. With the poor soundproofing, we heard the people and cars passing by. There are plenty of other Airbnbs in town. The night before, we had a five-star stay at Imera B&B, with a great host, helpful tips, a delicious breakfast at the property, and clean rooms. Pietro has a lot to learn about hospitality.
