The Grand Hotel Savoy in Gardone Riviera feels like a place where you can stay among layers of history, not just spend a night. Its background is laid out on an outdoor plaque in Italian, English and German. Opened in 1906, it became popular with international visitors and notable figures including Gabriele D’Annunzio, Umberto of Savoy and Winston Churchill. It also served as a military hospital from 1943 to 1945, and the building seems full of stories from that turbulent, heroic period. Its central position, marked as number 1 on the local map, makes it easy to walk to historic villas, the casino and attractions along the lake. The hotel also hosts events in a warm, sophisticated interior, with heavy velvet curtains and soft golden lighting. At an event, the finger food buffet was elegantly presented. There were small bites such as unusual green mini-burgers and fresh vegetable crudités with dipping sauces, all carefully arranged. Guests and staff were often dressed elegantly, giving the gathering a formal but welcoming feel. With its architecture and history, it’s a fitting stop for anyone drawn to the past as well as comfort. Staying here can feel like stepping back into early 20th-century European travel. Its central location, professional event service and well-prepared appetizers make it seem suited to conferences, gala dinners or a quiet, nostalgic vacation.

The food and service were both great, and the hotel itself is lovely. Our waiters Giacomo and Umberto were especially good, while Lorenzo the barman is quite a character. All the receptionists were friendly and helpful too. I’d definitely recommend the hotel.

The location is beautiful, but I felt the hotel could be more thoughtful toward its guests. The staff weren’t especially friendly or helpful, and nobody seemed interested in making the stay memorable. After many years working in hotels, I feel guests should be made to feel important, and that was definitely lacking at Hotel Savoy. Our room was right next to the rooftop party area, which carried on beyond the times posted at the bar. It was very noisy. During our stay, the staff seemed more focused each day on catering to the rooftop guests. That was just my observation, but it gave that impression.

The staff made things easy from the moment we arrived, especially the receptionists, who were genuinely lovely and helpful. Our room was spacious, and we enjoyed relaxing by the pool, taking in the lake view, and eating well. The location is great for reaching other Lake Garda towns by car or boat, and there are plenty of good restaurants within walking distance. Parking was very affordable: the hotel’s yellow H spaces were free, and other spots cost €12 a day. My two gripes were that there was no coffee in the room and the internet got very slow at night.

The terrace bar at the hotel was stunning, and we were also just a short walk from other bars and restaurants. There’s a ferry stop nearby too, which made it easy to explore more of Lake Garda. We were here for our honeymoon, and the whole stay felt magical. The hotel itself is beautiful, the rooms are comfortable, and the pool area is gorgeous. The staff were amazing, and we enjoyed both the delicious breakfast and dinner there. I’d return in a heartbeat.
