I think I’d have been better off paying more to stay closer to the old town. The historic center is a 12-minute walk, and September makes Grado a useful base for trips to Aquileia, Trieste, and Gorica. On the other hand, street parking was tight, and the hotel’s €6-per-night parking felt like a joke given how cramped the spaces were. Nobody was using them, and the lot isn’t monitored at night. There’s a large car park two blocks away. Service leaves at 9pm. I can’t imagine what it’s like here in August, and the hotel could make its beach arrangements more accommodating after September. The rooms and building are understandably dated, though the bathrooms have been updated and are fine. The buffet breakfast is basic tourist fare but sufficient, and the younger staff are enthusiastic and helpful. It’s a no-frills beach hotel, and you get what you pay for.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was much smaller than we expected, with basic furniture and a bathroom smaller than one on a cruise ship. Breakfast was a typical European spread, cold, with plenty of fruit and bread.

The only real positives were that the beach was about three minutes away and the AC worked. For what we paid, the rest was a huge letdown. The whole hotel smelled bad, and it felt dirty everywhere, from the stairs to the breakfast plates, cups, and glasses. In our room, the carpet was filthy and extremely old, and the walls and wardrobes were dirty too. We couldn’t sleep well on the worn-out mattresses, and the thin walls let us hear conversations and other sounds from above and next door. The bathroom was awful: there was barely room to turn around in the shower, and the old toilet seat was dirty and chipped. We also asked about parking and were only told about the garage, which cost extra.

The location is excellent, close to many places of interest, and we enjoyed the lovely terrace and the choice and quality at breakfast, especially the coffee. The room was generally clean, though its walls were scratched and needed upkeep. Most of the staff were kind and helpful. We’d stayed at Hotel Europa before and had good memories, so we chose it again for a four-night holiday. This time, though, we’d requested a double bed when booking and had written confirmation, but arrived to find two separate beds with uncomfortable mattresses. At breakfast, the coffee spoons were often missing and we had to ask for them. It’s a small detail, but one that matters at a hotel of this standard. Our experience was badly affected by one receptionist, an older blonde „lady” with glasses. She seemed visibly irritated whenever we asked a question or made a simple request, like ordering lemonade. On our departure morning, we asked if we could leave a small gift at reception for a friend we hadn’t managed to meet. She reluctantly agreed. An hour later I asked for a pen to write the recipient’s name on it. She waved her hands and said she was busy on the computer. When we showed her the parcel, she raised her voice and asked, “What do we want to leave here, and for whom?” She wouldn’t or couldn’t answer in English or German. When I asked her name, she told me, “Finish this – speak Italian.” Misunderstandings and language barriers happen, but they can be handled patiently and politely. This interaction had none of that, and we lost trust in the hotel, to the point that we decided not to leave the gift. I’ve stayed in many hotels and have never been treated with such disrespect. Guest trust and satisfaction are central to a hotel’s reputation, and even one employee can seriously harm it if they don’t reflect the hotel’s standards. I regret that this second visit was probably my last. I recognize the good points, but the way we were treated on departure left a deep impression. I hope these comments are taken constructively, especially the point that a considerate attitude can matter more than convenience, right through the final minutes of a guest’s stay.

Parking was said to be included, but we had to pay €1.8 per hour to leave the car on the street. The rooms looked nothing like the pictures, more like dorm rooms, and everything, from the walls to the furniture, was shabby. For such a poor stay, it was quite expensive. Never again.
