The setting was pleasant, and the women who greeted us were friendly. The waiter serving our table, though, didn't speak English, despite the English menu, and that caused repeated confusion. My partner asked for sparkling water and got still at first. It was corrected quickly, but it set the tone for the meal. We waited a long time for food after the beers arrived. While we waited, they brought plain sliced bread with nothing to go with it. Then my rabbit dish arrived as pork in sauce with deep-fried potatoes and no vegetables or garnish. I explained the mix-up through Google Translate, and they took it back. My partner ate his Capricciosa pizza while I waited about another 15 minutes for the rabbit. The rabbit was good and nicely seasoned once it came. The pizza was bland, the toppings kept sliding off, and it felt unfinished. The potatoes were supposed to be small roasted ones, but they were large diced pieces and seemed far too oily. After all that waiting, the food didn't make up for the mistakes. The beer was the best part. The outdoor seating is lovely on a warm evening, and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere, but the whole visit was well below what we expected.
The stockfish and potatoes were fantastic, and the stuffed mussels too. Save room for farinata or the wood-fired pasta. Prices are very fair. It also seems to be a popular neighborhood place for pizza.
I really enjoyed eating at Da Caren. The food was simple but had distinctive, special flavors, and it all felt authentic and carefully made. It’s a nice place to try local dishes without the touristy feel. Worth a stop if you're in La Spezia.
We came back a second time, and I'd happily go again if we're passing through La Spezia. This unassuming little place was a real find on our Italy trip. The Tagliata-dish was among the best meals we've ever had, and the pizzas were excellent too. Find a parking-spot on a nearby street and enjoy a very fine meal at more than fair prices. 👍
The panna cotta was probably the best thing we've ever eaten. The spaghetti with mussels and rabbit with roast potatoes were also perfectly cooked, delicious, and made with real care. We tried the house sparkling wine and liked that too. We got lucky with a table by arriving early without a booking, but I'd recommend reserving one. The food here is incredible; you won't regret eating here.
