Hotel Boton D'Or & Wellness a La Thuile

My biggest frustration was how management handled my request to cancel when I was unwell. I booked impulsively, then tried to cancel well in advance, shared medical documentation, and asked Booking.com for support. Even after several requests and proof of a medical emergency, the hotel wouldn't refund me or offer meaningful flexibility. When I spoke directly with the manager, the tone felt condescending and my concerns were repeatedly dismissed. I eventually rescheduled and travelled while still unwell. They offered a bottle of wine and chocolates, but that didn't address the lack of empathy or the poor handling of a customer in crisis. It left a sour impression and felt rigid and profit-driven. The hotel is well placed for skiing, and the nature and trails are lovely, but there's little else to do, especially without a car. Public transport is a long, difficult option. My room was cozy but cramped, with little room to move or work. The charming lobby, games, and ski room were nice touches. Spa access was limited to 15:00-19:30 and required advance booking. The facilities amounted to two jacuzzis and a dry sauna, with no working steam room during my visit. Breakfast was average and repetitive, with almost no vegetables and the same options each day. The staff seemed competent, but the hospitality lacked warmth. Rose and another young woman at breakfast were a bright spot. For what it cost, the experience was disappointing.

I don't like leaving negative reviews, but this one feels necessary. Our winter skiing stay itself was very nice. The problem came when rockfall closed the main road out, leaving the route over a pass above 2,000m as the only way out of the valley. We told the hotel two days ahead that we'd leave a day early, because we didn't feel safe driving a hire car without chains to the airport early in the morning, in minus 10 degree weather and snow. The hotel refused to refund the unused night and only told us at checkout, at the last minute. We had booked directly, not through a third party, and the terms and conditions said nothing about no refund for an early departure. We were leaving because of circumstances beyond our control. It made me feel the hotel cared more about squeezing out every last cent than customer satisfaction.

The receptionist was incredibly understanding when we arrived in such awful weather that we considered cancelling altogether. They were ready to cancel our stay for free if we chose to do so after checking conditions up the mountain. The rooms were small but decent and cozy. Our shower in room #102 was too small, while our friends' room #114 had a bigger, nicer one. The spa was clean, pleasant, and relaxing after a day on the slopes. I wish one of the two saunas were a Turkish bath, but it's still a nice place to unwind.

The staff were nice and helpful with activity bookings and tips around town, especially one woman who was very helpful. The location was good too. But the manager didn't seem professional or customer-oriented. We booked a mountain-view room through booking for over 200 €/night, and the picture attached here shows the actual view, a construction site. That was really disappointing. When we complained, she didn't believe us and was almost aggressive. Call ahead to confirm you have a room on the front side.
