The meals are the reason to visit La Docciola, and you can come just for lunch or dinner without booking a room. Reservations are a good idea, especially on weekends. The owners are warm and clearly care about what they do, and the service is impeccable. Each course is thoughtfully prepared using recipes handed down over generations. There’s a lot of flavor in the generous portions, from ribollita and pappardelle with Venetian-style liver to other pasta dishes with tasty, wholesome sauces. The cooking brings traditional Tuscan cucina povera back to life, with local ingredients and plenty of history behind it. Am I overselling it? Try it and see. La Docciola is a guesthouse and restaurant in the village of Chitignano, in the peaceful, fragrant Casentino. It’s also well placed for exploring the area, a few kilometers from the Sanctuary of La Verna and the peaks of Monte Penna, as well as the small, interesting Museum of Powder and Contraband and Acquaforte, a naturally carbonated, iron-rich spring that has been known since ancient times for its beneficial effects on the urinary system. If you’re passing through Chitignano, even stopping for a meal gives you a taste of home, tradition, and real Tuscany.

The swimming pool was lovely, but I had a bad stay otherwise. The hotel accommodates underground 18 football teams even while other guests are there. The young people make a lot of noise and shout, so you can’t sleep, day or night.

We had lunch here for a ceremony. The menu was delicious, and the welcome was attentive. Service was excellent, and the dishes were made with top quality products.

We ate well at our family dinner. The restaurant is part of a two-star guesthouse, the portions were generous, and service was quick.
