We’d been on the road for a while and were exhausted, so the suite upgrade, with both a shower and a bathtub, was especially welcome. From the moment we arrived, Vanessa greeted us warmly at the door. It’s a rare comfort when a receptionist seems truly happy you’re there. I’d been to Italy before, but this was my first visit to Lucca. Since joining Bonvoy, I’ve stayed at more than 20 of its properties, and the team here was the friendliest and most hospitable I’ve encountered in Italy. Their warmth reminded me of the exceptional hospitality I’ve experienced at some places I’ve stayed in Türkiye. A few practical details: the hotel is walkable from Lucca train station, though the historic walkways aren’t great with luggage. We managed with our large suitcase, and there were taxis at the station when we arrived. The hotel can also arrange a taxi for departure. On our second day I had questions about the modern, chic bath faucets and the heated towel rack. Mare listened carefully and took time to help. After our day trip to Pisa, Ylenia was at reception and already knew about my questions, because Mare had passed the details on before leaving for the day. That thoughtful communication really stood out. MariaPia looked after us wonderfully at breakfast and coffee during our first three days. Her attention to detail and perfectionism were clear. We also had lunch while she was on duty, and it was one of the most delicious meals we’d had in a long time. The cooks in the Grand Universe home kitchen did an outstanding job, so we went back for one last lunch on our departure day. The food was exceptionally fresh, even with the restaurant quiet in February, and the freshness and quality deserve recognition. When MariaPia was off, Vicky brought the same hospitality to breakfast and lunch. The rooftop is open on certain days, but you’re free to go up and enjoy the view. Autograph Collection Grand Universe felt like a home away from home. The whole team made us feel comfortable and welcome, and we left wanting to come back soon to see our friends there again.
