We got the last room after arriving in Lucca without a booking, and Patrizia, the manager, was really helpful. The hotel is in a beautiful old building, with a shared kitchen stocked with snacks and drinks that are free or close to cost price, plus a lovely terrace for guests. Our spacious room had everything we needed. Even with restaurants nearby and the room on a corner, it was quiet at night. We kept the windows shut in the cool weather, and the room didn't get hot. There's air conditioning, though its minimum temperature is limited to save energy, which seems fair. We didn't hear other guests through the solid-looking walls. There's a flight of stairs up to the bedrooms, so it may not work for guests with mobility problems. I didn't spot any ground-floor rooms, but it could be worth asking. It was very good value for a spacious room in a great location, ideal for a night in Lucca. I'd gladly stay again.

The patio is cute, but the push for extra charges really caught me off guard. The owner wanted cash and said card payment would mean adding a fee, which he did without my consent. My bill also included things I hadn't used, including air conditioning and a bottle of wine. There was a breakfast charge too, even though the only breakfast items were coffee pods and cookies in the room. I'm sure he'll say in response that I wasn't a guest, and I'll be glad to show my credit card company the proof.

We'd prepaid for the night and had told the owners in advance that our flight was delayed by three hours. Still, when we arrived at 9 pm with our very tired baby, they refused to check us in. They said check-in ended at 7 pm and told us to sort it out with Booking.com. We even offered to collect the keys wherever was convenient, but they hung up. Probably the worst travel experience we've had.

We let the accommodation know well ahead of our trip that we would arrive late. A few hours before we got there, the host said he'd missed our stated arrival time and it was now too late to check us in. He also refused to refund us. Very poor service.
