The decor is very individual, and parking was easy. It’s a nice B&B about a ten-minute walk from the city walls. It sits at a fairly busy junction, so there’s some traffic noise.

The hotel was very clean, with excellent rooms and good service. It’s easy to get to by bus from the train station. Ms Martina and Ms Sabrina were both very kind and quick to respond.

Martina made me feel so welcome at check-in. She took care to say my name, apologized for possibly mispronouncing it even though she’d said it correctly, and walked me through how the B&B works and what to do in Lucca. It’s a small thing, but it made a real difference. She and her team put so much care into the cleanliness and details of this older building. I got the attic room, which I’d read was the basic economy option, but I felt like Princess Beauty up in a tower, and I’m a man! The little sweets and ribbons on the towels are such a nice touch and suit the character of the place. Road noise didn’t bother me at all, and was very minimal. Martina also provides earplugs just in case. It’s a leisurely walk of no more than ten minutes to the first wall of Lucca. Breakfast is what makes this place special. It’s a long way from typical continental fare, with beautifully decorated food and such a huge variety that I ate enough to skip lunch. For the price, the B&B goes well beyond what you’d expect to make the stay wonderful. Martina and, I think, Grosso, who served us breakfast, deserve credit for running it so well. Sorry if I got her name wrong. When you check out, they also give you little homemade biscuits made by Martina’s mama, and they’re so, so yummy. Thank you, Martina. After reading this, I hope you’ll book here too. -x-

We slept really well in the comfortable beds, and our room was very clean. We didn’t hear any road noise, despite what some other reviews say. The receptionist was perfect, really friendly and helpful with suggestions for Lucca. Communication before check-in was fantastic, too. We’d definitely recommend staying here if you’re visiting Lucca.

The room was spotless and the breakfast incredible. Martina and the team were so hospitable. It’s outside Lucca’s old town but close enough to walk to the centre, making it a perfect B&B for visiting the city. I’d recommend Principe Calaf to everyone. Come and enjoy it.
