Villa La Dogana

The hosts were amazing, and breakfast had great options. This clean, comfortable property has a typical Tuscan feel. There’s parking, and good restaurant options are less than 10 minutes away.

We only stayed one night and enjoyed the place so much that we didn’t make it to Lucca, though it seems very close. The room was comfortable, with a nice bed and a large bathroom. What made the B&B feel so unique were all the details in the old house, its enormous garden, and the flower terrace. There are several spots for tea, each more beautiful than the last. Highly recommended!

This little gem sits on a road that seems to disappear into the Italian countryside. It has the feel of the country home of a noble Italian family, the Orsini. Very old trees fill the lovely grounds, and the villa has been restored with care and furnished with authentic antiques. The bath and mattress are modern, the hostess and proprietor is charming, and breakfast was delicious in a lovely setting. Lucca is a short drive away, so you’re out of the bustle but still close to town.

The only real downside was poor phone reception inside, and the nearby railway wasn’t a disturbance. There’s Wi-Fi, a pleasant back garden, and easy access to hiking paths along the Serchio River. You can also walk or cycle all the way to Lucca, which I’d recommend. The owner is very friendly, the rooms are comfortable, and the ground-floor rooms stay cool in summer. It’s not far from Lucca, with a bus stop very close, and works well for visiting both Lucca and Pisa.
