Pietra di Luna Hotel

The rooms are modest and quite old, though everything was clean. The hotel is close to the beach. In the lobby, there’s a shelf of books in different languages, so you can borrow one if you forgot yours or leave one you’ve finished. Breakfast was very limited: tomatoes were the only vegetables, and there were hard-boiled and scrambled eggs every day, two kinds of sausage, sliced cheese, bread, croissants, and butter. Fruit was available on request, but nobody told us to ask for it. At the beach, we had to argue with staff to get a first-row sunbed because they seemed to prefer selling them rather than giving them to guests. People smoked there constantly, even though staff said smoking was prohibited. Nobody intervened or enforced the rule. Since I’m pregnant, my husband kept having to approach guests himself and ask them not to smoke.

The room was spotless, and the reception staff were helpful. It had air conditioning, so it stayed cool in summer. The sea is a minute away across the road, and some rooms have a sea view. There’s also a large pool with deep water for adults and a smaller one for children. The staff are friendly with kids, but things like potties aren’t provided, so this isn’t really a children’s hotel. The restaurant staff were funny and kind, and the service was excellent. Breakfast seemed geared toward American and English visitors who want familiar food, with bacon and eggs every day. The coffee was more like tea. You could also have an Italian breakfast with cornetti and other cakes, plus espresso. Oat, soy, rice, and almond milk were available on request, but there wasn’t much else for vegans. I missed fresh fruit, since the fruit on offer was canned, and would have liked more vegetables and cakes without milk or eggs.

It was easy to explore the coast from here, with a port nearby for day trips to Amalfi, Positano, and Capri. We also liked coming back to the calmer setting of Maiori in the evening. The hotel view was lovely, and Friday’s evening entertainment was just right, with a great song selection and a lovely band. We had a great stay. The rooms were always spotless, the cleaning staff were fantastic, and nothing was too much trouble. The evening food was lovely, and the staff were hilarious and always up for a joke. Massimo was especially lovely, recommending places to eat and checking throughout dinner that everyone was enjoying themselves. We’d definitely come back. Thank you!

We loved Maiori itself, and the hotel is ideally located, but not being allowed to use the hotel’s private beach made for a disappointing stay in June 2025. We escalated our complaint to TUI, but neither the hotel nor TUI confirmed who was at fault. The hotel said it was TUI. We then contacted The Times travel correspondent, who kindly listened to our situation. After that intervention, we reached a satisfactory resolution, and our case appeared in the Saturday edition this weekend. The hotel manager has alleged that we were told sunbeds would cost £/€26 per day for the two of us, two single women in separate single rooms. That was not mentioned during any of our three enquiries to reception staff, the assistant manager, or the manager himself. The hotel website didn’t mention this policy either. If you’re travelling alone and want beach facilities, make sure your travel provider tells you that you can’t use them at this hotel.
