Once you’ve had enough of the busy coast, this peaceful spot in the woods of the Cinque Terre hinterland is a lovely place to settle in. The property is kept in great shape, and Helmut and Bert are generous with useful ideas for outings. It also makes a handy base for visiting places between Genoa and La Spezia.

We spent a very happy week here. The rooms were lovely, the pool was clean, and there’s a cozy terrace for breakfast or a drink in the evening. The views are beautiful, breakfast is delicious, and the hosts are friendly and glad to offer advice. It’s all tucked up in the mountains. A small practical tip for peak season: bring a battery-powered travel fan for sleeping. The thick walls keep out most of the heat, but once it’s over 35 degrees, they can’t keep all of it away. Rita, a good restaurant with tasty food, is about 10 minutes away. Varese Ligure is around a 20-minute drive, passing two gas stations on the way; the village has EV charging stations. Beaches and towns are also within a pleasant half-hour drive.

We spent a week here with our daughters, and the way Bert and Helmut welcome guests is a big part of the experience. They’re a warm, charming couple, open and honest, and happy to share local tips when asked. They’re available without being in your way, and we felt at home. The hillside setting is peaceful, surrounded by nature, with a lovely pool. Our room was spotless and carefully kept, with tasteful decor and artistic touches. The meals are made with care, and you can taste it. Bert and Helmut make a balanced team, and their easy harmony comes through. It’s well placed for exploring Lerici, Pietrasanta, Sestri Levante and the Cinque Terre, though staying at the B&B and enjoying the quiet is just as appealing. Fraseneggi is a little gem.

We’re three guests staying in Apartment Rosso this week, and there’s loads of space in this apartment for four or five people. Helmut and Bert have clearly put work into it over the winter: the outside has a fresh coat of paint, the interior is beautifully finished, and they’ve given breakfast a lot of attention. With the lovely weather, we ate outside on the terrace this morning and enjoyed that view. We’ll come back.
