Liberty Hotel Malé

A great hotel for a ski holiday, with good food options.

The replacement room was outside the main hotel, and at least it had Wi-Fi, unlike the room with bed bugs. But hot water ran out after about 10 minutes, the walls were paper-thin, and we had to ask for room service every day because it was forgotten. Both rooms were dusty and outdated. The bed bug bites were confirmed by a doctor, who prescribed cream. When we raised it with the manager, he showed no regret, first saying it wasn't his fault and later suggesting we had brought them ourselves. A review from eight months earlier described the same problem. He said insurance would pay us if we emailed, but another reviewer was still waiting to hear from them. We did eventually receive some compensation, though not from the insurance. The staff were very friendly and tried their best, but seemed untrained. Dirty plates were placed on our table, the same sponge was used on tables and seats, and we saw a waiter cough into a cloth before using it to clean cups. My mother became very sick with a digestive virus, with symptoms on our last day. Staff told us many employees were ill and there seemed to be an outbreak, though we can't know where she caught it. I blame the manager for not training and supervising the team properly, rather than the waiters who didn't know better. The food was awful. We ate just to get nourishment. One soup was basically water with soup flavoring, and other reviews have mentioned the food too. We were bitten during our stay and found bed bugs on the sheets, as shown in the pictures. The itching was terrible. Between that, the hygiene issues and the manager's response, I want others to know what to expect.

Right in the middle of Malé, and the hotel is neat, well run, and has great facilities. The staff are friendly and really go out of their way. It seems like it could be lovely in summer too, and it has all the services you need for a ski trip. Thanks especially to Simona. After I had an accident on the slopes, her sports massage helped me recover quickly.

The room Wi-Fi barely worked, the shower water was cold, and the rooms were cold too. Staff didn't seem very interested in their guests. On top of that, we ended up paying twice what we had been told because of poor communication from the hotel. They wouldn't take responsibility for the mistake. I can't recommend staying here. It was so bad, I'd give it zero if I could, but I'm giving it one.
