The seven tourist villages south of Manfredonia sit beside a sandy stretch of sea, but the municipality leaves them completely neglected. They could be a real driving force for local tourism. Manfredonia itself, at the foot of the Gargano, is worth a visit. There’s the Swabian-Norman castle, the clock tower, the cathedral, and Lake Salso, a natural aquatic oasis.

I was there for just one night in the low season, when the whole village seemed in turmoil, probably with the new season coming up. The place has a lot of potential.

A dirty disaster. The rooms were filthy and ugly, and the staff left us to hunt around for our room. We changed rooms three times, and every one of them was very dirty. I wouldn't go back even if they paid me.
