Fantastic location 💥🤩

The location was ideal, and we got a friendly welcome, a clear explanation, and a city map. We also liked having a private garage just 100m away for €14/day. Café Roberta is right around the corner, which was a nice bonus. The walkway was clean and well kept. Our room had a stylish, almost stately look, though it felt echoey rather than cozy. The layout wasn't what we expected: the living room, single room, and kitchen were together on one side, while the bedroom and bathroom were across the hall, and there wasn't a separate living area. Both the bedroom and living room had balconies, but neither had seating. They left sparkling water and coffee, but there was no pan, dish towel, or dishwasher detergent.

In all my years traveling and staying in hotels, I've never had a stay where I didn't see the owner. The garage service was just as bad: we handed our keys to a staff member and couldn't get them back until the second-to-last day. A hotel run by ghosts! RIDICULOUS!

Stay away from Casa San Domenico and Casa degli Scacchi in Mantua. Casa degli Scacchi is at Via Gilberto Govi ​​17, Mantua, and both properties are managed by the same host. I posted the same review for the other property because we had a terrible experience. We booked three nights at a city-center property, but when we arrived, the host said a plumbing problem caused by previous guests had made it uninhabitable. He moved us to a bare apartment outside the center that wasn't fit to live in. When we asked to stay in the place we'd booked despite the plumbing issue, he first agreed, then changed his mind. I believe he'd already rented our apartment to someone else. It seemed like the plumbing problem was presented as an unexpected emergency, while the bookings had actually been arranged in advance to double-book the place and make him look like he had saved our trip. We later read reviews from others who said they'd run into the same problem. He came across as trustworthy and honest at first, which made it feel like a nasty scam.
