The breakfast alone was a treat, with top-quality cheeses, cured meats, juices, coffee, cappuccino, and jams made from fruit grown in the palace gardens. Everything felt exceptionally well cared for, right down to the linens, towels, and slippers. My room had air conditioning, and the bathroom had both a tub and shower, plus a hairdryer and the usual bidet. The palace also has heating for winter and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout. Palazzo Torriani is a remarkable historical experience. Its architecture and period details show its 500-year history, while the artwork, decorated walls, and gardens make the place feel elegant and peaceful. Even in summer it was cool and welcoming. It sits in the historic center, in a calm, beautiful, and very safe area, with lovely views of the hills and their local vegetation. There’s also a handy drinking water fountain right outside. Anna Maria Torriani, the hostess and a direct descendant of the nobles who built the palace, was gracious and refined as well as welcoming. I was lucky to see her daughter and young grandson having breakfast, which brought a warm, homely feeling to the palace. One of the best experiences of my life. I highly recommend it.

We felt like part of the family here, and the hosts were wonderfully warm and generous with stories about the town and their own history. Their family has been part of Maradi for more than 500 years. They also gave us personalized suggestions for hikes, meals, and other things to do, and offer tailored cooking classes. The class and breakfasts were both plentiful and delicious. Palazzo Torriani is in a rural town in the Apennine hills, with comfortable, spacious rooms, some decorated with 15th century frescoes. The annual chestnut festival in Maradi is well off the tourist trail and worth attending. We had a magical stay and couldn’t recommend it more.

We stopped for a night between Florence and Bologna, and Palazzo Torriani was majestic from end to end. The food was superb, and Torriani treated us to the best meringue we’ve ever had. The owner and her daughter were incredibly sweet, and even sent us home with a jar of homemade marmalade. Can’t recommend it enough, a must-visit!

The town felt like an undiscovered gem, and everyone we met was friendly. We enjoyed a nearby hike in Brisighella, plus day trips to the winery, Zebina and lavender farm, Monte Spada. Local train trips were easy, since the station is within walking distance of Palazzo Torriani. After busy days, the palace gardens were a lovely place to unwind. The rooms were clean and felt straight out of a royal movie, with frescoes on high ceilings, family heirlooms, claw foot tubs, and beautiful hand-tiled floors. The owners were gracious and made us feel like royalty, and the homemade food each day was delicious. Take a cooking class! This was the highlight of our family trip to Italy, an unforgettable stay, and we’ll absolutely return.

After a quick 1 hour 10 minute train ride from Marradi, you can be in Bologna or Florence, and the station is just a 7 minute walk from this magnificent place. The host and owner welcomed me through beautiful old wooden doors. Stepping inside felt like being transported to another century of elegance. This 500 year old Palace, surrounded by beautiful hills, is one of the most magnificent places I’ve ever stayed.
