Palazzo Gattini - VRetreats

The rooftop view and the spa are both spectacular, and breakfast was perfect. I'm writing this from our bed because we're still here. Probably one of the best hotels in Matera. The staff are so kind, and speaking English when needed was a huge plus. A perfect couples' retreat, and such a lovely stay.

The room we got was dark and gloomy, and felt used. We were told that every room in this boutique hotel is different, but our travel companions had a junior suite with a view, daylight, sunrise and sunset, plus a terrace and plunge pool. Ours faced the cathedral, while theirs had the kind of view and light we expected. Make sure your booking confirms a room facing the valley with sun and light. The staff were service-minded, but their attempts to be friendly became silly. No thanks, that wasn't needed. The so-called junior suite wasn't worth the money.

I left disappointed and mistrustful. For the first time ever, I refused to leave a tip, not because I was stingy, but because I didn't want to reward what felt like dishonest behavior. The bill already had a 15% service charge printed on it, even though it was called optional. The waitress smiled and said she could redo the bill without it, as if this little routine were normal. I felt pressured and nearly went along just to avoid an awkward moment. That's not hospitality, it felt manipulative. This is Italy, not the US, and tips are voluntary. Presenting it this way felt rude and insulting. A five-star hotel should make guests feel welcome, not tricked. I hope other guests speak up so practices like this can stop.

Nico from the restaurant helped me out after my knee operation, when I'd overdone it enjoying the town's history. Thanks again! I've stayed in many hotels for work and holidays, and the staff here are on another level, going above and beyond. The rooms are clean and bright, and the public areas smell fantastic. It's an outstanding hotel, and you won't be disappointed staying here.
