It’s not cheap, but the location is excellent if you want to stay right in the heart of the Sassi di Matera. The house is charming and tastefully furnished, and the bathroom with the pool is great. Just be ready to haul your bags along steep, cobbled lanes. Getting there could be difficult if you have a physical problem. We had a really good stay, with only a few little things keeping it from perfect.

There’s room for as many as 4 people here. The house is fairly large, right in the center of the sassi, and very neat and clean.

The General's apartment has a terrace and a view that make the trip worthwhile, and it’s an ideal choice for a peaceful, romantic break. You’re just steps from the Piazzetta Pascoli viewpoint, with everything you need close by. The owners were wonderfully helpful and kind, even meeting us at the parking lot and walking us over. The interiors are cared for, though a little bare and without much reference to local craftsmanship. The bathroom is the most original and thoughtfully put-together part. For a stay in the Sassi, this is definitely one of the best places.

Michele greeted us in the little square above the house, then walked down with us and shared stories about Matera along with some excellent tips. He’s a wonderful person. The independent home is tucked among the Sassi, clean, and very spacious. Photos don’t really show how lovely it is. Highly recommended for a stay in a truly charming home.
