Our kids were especially happy to sleep in the “cave,” and the home itself was clean, cozy, and full of character. La Dimora Rupestre is tucked just below the main street, with some of the city's best views and sights only a few steps away. The host was so friendly and replied right away to all our questions. A great choice if you want an authentic cave stay in Matera.

Stay away. The central location is the one thing in its favor. The bathroom is so cramped it’s almost unusable, the wifi barely works, if it works at all, and bits of ceiling debris are falling down. Absolutely not.

I’ll leave out the details of what happened and the serious problems we ran into. I don’t want to hand useful advice to people who seem to have no business working in hospitality or customer service. As for the good reviews, I can only assume those travelers are used to very low standards.

The humidity made it hard to breathe and impossible to get a decent night's sleep, and the ceiling was slippery. We couldn't sleep at all. If zero stars were an option, that's what I'd give.

The trullo has been fully renovated, but still gives you the chance to sleep in the “sassi.” It was a truly evocative and beautiful experience.
