Locanda San Gallo

The meal itself was poor: chewy meat, salty gravy, and mushy plain boiled potatoes. It felt like being on a 17th-century merchant ship, waiting for land that never appeared and wondering where the stew meat came from after the horses had been dead for weeks. We were also overcharged for the goulash, charged 5€ for the potatoes, and billed a cover charge for the “experience”. But the food wasn't really the issue. The woman running the place seemed to dislike me and my girlfriend from the moment we arrived, though her husband was pleasant, so we let it go. On our second evening, she took over and told us, without showing a menu, that lasagna was the only option. We wondered if this was some local custom, maybe the truck bringing ingredients other than lasagna came the next day, and tried to ignore her rudeness. When we asked about meat, she said, “Oh, you eat meat?” as if surprised we were people who ate anything beyond lasagna. Goulash, she said. Potatoes too. Fine. We had to ask the nicer man for drinks because she hadn't mentioned them. Then another table arrived and, would you believe it, she gave them a menu. I asked why it wasn't suitable for us, and she curtly replied, “It's the same.” It was several pages long, with plenty of words besides “lasagna”. When I pointed that out, she turned away and busied herself with the other table, apparently out of things to say. As a traveler, I don't speak the local language, though I do try. We kept our voices down and behaved properly at the table. I can't think of anything we did to deserve such hostility from her. I hope she's reading this and remembers it, because I certainly will.

The restaurant was nicely decorated and the food was great. We stayed in the comfortable guesthouse, an old building that's in very good shape. The hosts were very nice and made sure I had everything I needed. Nothing to complain about.

The service took ages, and the food was terrible. Awful restaurant.

Such a friendly place! We had a perfect stay!!!
