Corto Maltese Rooms

The room was full of problems. There was a strong musty smell, which the owner kept trying to cover with Air Wick, mold on the ceiling, and a filthy mirror. The bathroom was outside the room despite the description saying it was inside. It and the towels were extremely dirty, with other people's hair on them, and there was no soap. The radiators were off, the electrical outlets were damaged, and there was no television or telephone. We even found the spare linens on a dusty cabinet in the attic. Getting to the room meant climbing three very steep flights of stairs without handrails, dangerous even with one suitcase. The furniture looked like it was from 1915-18. We waited over 30 minutes in the cold for the owner to welcome us, and at breakfast we were told to "make do" with a coffee maker and four slices of toast. The Booking.com photos were taken from angles that hid these issues. We left quickly and got our money back. Next candidate for Nightmare Hotel.

The location was nice, and the bathroom extractor was powerful, but it was so loud that using it at 2 am would wake everyone. The rest was badly maintained. The Wi-Fi and heating didn't work, and I found hairs and visible yellow stains in the bed, plus mascara marks and two blood stains on the pillow. There was dust and cobwebs everywhere. Breakfast was a coffee machine with no water, a packet of snacks, and a bottle of grapefruit juice that had been open for days. It could be looked after much better.

In the historic center, with lovely, simple rooms that were clean. We were even given two sets of shower towels, which we hadn't expected. Highly recommended!

The room was €27, so what are you expecting? I agree with the negative reviews, but they missed the price.
