The location worked well for getting around: Montaione is about a 10-minute drive, Florence and Siena around an hour, and San Gimignano and Volterra roughly half an hour. Parking is very convenient, even covered, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We stayed in the two-bedroom, two-bathroom Boccherini apartment, with a kitchen. It needs a lot of attention, though. The kitchen has sparse, old, worn-out equipment, and all the bug screens are broken. Both bathrooms look tired, with yellowed plastic and worn toilets and showers. The main bedroom toilet needs a bang to stop it flushing, the shower head won’t stay in its holder, and the shower itself is tiny despite the bathroom having room for a larger one. The two sofa seats are worn, uncomfortable, and feel unhygienic. Mice were everywhere, even getting into our bags at night to steal sweets. The pool seemed not to have been properly cleaned in ages, with brown rims along the water. Most garden chairs are defective and look like they’ve spent years in the scorching sun. Nearly everything needs a lot of care. An optimist might call it rustic and authentic, but in my opinion the price and quality don’t match.
